Eastern Young Athletes League Top 6 match, Watford 9th Sept

Having fought hard to get to the top six match we were rewarded with a victory in our strongest age group - the under 13 boys. In this match there is a trophy for each of the six age groups. We had such strength in depth that we had won the trophy before the last event was started. Despite winning doubles in the 200m and LJ it was the allround performances of ALL the athletes that secured this excellent win.

Southern Womens League, Kings Lynn 1st Sept

We had some good results and fought hard against the top team in teh division, who remained undeafted all season. In the end we came 6th in the division, missing out on promotion by a mere 50 points. These points were going begging at the Southend match, where we just didn't have enough athletes and only scored 121 points, when we scored over 173 in every other match. With the youngsters coming through we should certainly have a strong enough team for promotion next year.

Club Biathlon, 19th Aug

Competitors had to endure torrential rain, as was the case last week for the Orienteering, and this made the bike ride a little more dangerous. Fortunately, there were no mishaps but a couple of our guests went off course. Afterwards one said that he remembered going up Cat Hill three times! As expected, times were generally rather slower than last year but Alan Radley had improved performances in both disciplines and Graham Barnett afterwards said that his bike ride was a PB. The result was never in doubt as Dave Candy, who is certainly in a class on his own, sped around the course almost effortlessly. Five ladies braved the elements. Kirsty and Penny Antoniou had good bike rides but overall Penny Wylie was outstanding with Helen Hoyle not far behind her.

THE THREE LEGGED TROPHY
Well done to those who managed to compete in all three events and congratulations to Sean Mitchell who displayed a cool determination to win the Trophy this year. Kirsty might have been closer but for an injury which slowed her running and she was in considerable discomfort as she struggled to complete the second phase of the Biathlon.

Family Paarlauf Championship, 16th Aug

There were some notable absentees this year including the powerful Team Wilcock together with several teams that have enjoyed success in the past. Last year’s family victors, Team Harvey had injury problems including reserve Brenda, but Leigh was in a non family pairing with Dave Candy as was Andy Cunningham who joined forces with Peter Graham and these teams finished 2nd and 3rd overall. However, it was the well balanced team of Sean Mitchell and James Taylor who stormed to victory although the time was over 2 minutes slower than the record set by Andy and his brother Phil last year. Andy achieved the best aggregate time for the six laps of Victoria Recreation Ground and had a best individual lap time of 1.59 which equalled his own fastest lap time of last year. Andy was perhaps made to work hard by team colleague Peter who, no doubt, enjoyed being so close to the front and was actually in the lead for a short while on lap 2. Not surprisingly, Helen Hoyle produced the best performance by a lady and Kirsty worked hard to get a reasonable time for the Three Legged Trophy. Despite the damp and dismal evening, there was a good turn out of 13 teams which in the early stages put a measure of stress on the officials, and warm thanks are due to Chris Stott for his time-keeping and to John Atkinson and John Owen who did an excellent job as recorders. This event was devised because the club has so many family groups and the trophies for this event are specifically for such teams. However, the competition has been opened up for any runners who wish to join forces to use the event for a good training workout or to register a time towards the Three Legged Trophy. To their great delight and perhaps with a degree of surprise Peter Rice and his daughter Sacha are the new holders of the Family Paarlauf Championship Cup and this was probably Peter’s first major success with the club. The Eugene Nicholaev Plate is for the first family team that includes a lady and as Peter and Sacha won the major trophy, it goes to the second team with a lady which is Maureen and John Shirley, the defending champions. By the same judgement the Peter Frean Cup was won by Anne and Rodger Thompstone . It was good to see the Thompstone family provide two teams. They were well matched and certainly seemed to enjoy themselves.

Club Orienteering Championship, 12th Aug

This year the event was held over Monken Hadley Common and, despite quite heavy rain, 15 took part and seemed to enjoy themselves. Fortunately the control markers were in place and the awning over the master map area was just about up before the rain arrived. Some participants were keen to register a good time to carry forward for the Three Legged Trophy as well as looking forward to the annual Sunday morning traditional Pymms picnic in the Park. As is usual, there were seven control points to locate, some on our cross country course, and the distance was approximately 6 kilometres depending on the route taken. Everyone located all the control points and in the main the standard of performance was good. Those who finished in under 65 minutes can be particularly well satisfied. Defending champion Andy Cunningham, who has now reached the veteran category, was absent as he had an important race elsewhere and that fixture claimed other veterans who had featured in the Three Legged Trophy result last year. Steve Chilton, who won this event in 1994 and 1996, and is probably more experienced at orienteering than most in the club, achieved a comfortable victory notwithstanding the fact that he claimed to be unfit. Runner-up Sean Mitchell was pleased with his performance which put him in a strong position for the Three Legged Trophy. It seems that control points 6 and 7 proved rather challenging to some of the competitors, and sadly Brenda Harvey lost her spectacles at the former. Some participants elected to go round the course in pairs and Maggie Govender and Steve Harris did particularly well. Nobody opted for the Junior short course and no one dropped out. As the competitors finished they huddled together under the awning for the social part of the morning and most of them quenched their considerable thirst with Pymms. The smoked salmon sandwiches were quickly consumed as were most of the other refreshments. At the party we were joined by Nick Bingham after he returned in very good form from his 14 miles training run and later by John Dugdale after a shorter and more gentle work out. A group of Trent Park Trotters who jogged past on a training run declined to stop and take refreshments with us. As usual it was good fun as well as providing a useful training workout with a difference. The unpleasant weather did not mar the occasion and everyone certainly seemed to enjoy themselves.

Stephen Rayner ran for Herts at the Southern Counties U13 match at Kingston. He was the only Barnet athlete in the team and finished 6th in the B 200m with a PB of 28.5 secs. Herts came 12th with 240 points. Surrey won with 349 points followed by Hants (343.5) and Kent (332).

Midweek Road Race League, Mob Match. Welwyn Garden City 24th July

Ladies Race - 5.66 miles The final match of the season, which is non-scoring for league points & when both divisions run together. A number of our regular team had already gone on holiday but we still managed to turn out 10 ladies. It was good to see several of the team back running after illness & injury. A good run from Kate leading the team home in 4th place, followed by Karen M. in 8th. We finished 3rd Senior team & 5th Vets team out of 12 teams. After the race we adjourned to the (crowded) bar for the presentations where several of ladies had medals to collect, Karen Bradley 2nd V35, Pauline Lygo 1st V55 & Penny Antoniou 2nd V55. We also collected team bronze medals for finishing 3rd Vet team (they will go to Karen Bradley, Jane Day & Penny Wylie). Well done to all 18 ladies who ran in any of the races – we’ve had a great team spirit throughout the season – let’s hope it continues. Thanks must go to Mick Tappin for all his help team managing at the races. Also thanks to Alan Radley & his wife Christine, in his first year as men’s team manager he has done a great job. Last, but not least, thanks to John Atkinson for his excellent work as Div. 1 Results Secretary.

Although this race that is not classed as a scoring event in the Midweek League, both divisions are collectively joined, so that there are 12 competing teams and prizes are awarded for the respective finishers. Another excellent turnout saw Barnet again excel in the individual and team positions, the first Barnet man home was Adrian Mason who was 3rd in a time of 29:39 just 21 seconds behind the winner, Sam Pullen (of St Albans). So considering that this event had all 12 midweek teams competing the club managed to perform exceptionally well on the evening, with results as follows: Senior men’s team 4th, Vets Men 2nd, Ladies team 3rd and Vets ladies 5th.. Barnet’s tally was 3rd Overall team so that’s a pat on the back to all those runners on the night. Keith Turner was 6th man home and the 1st over 40 in a race of which 240 competitors took part, and another mention must go to Des Michael who had another excellent run to finish the midweek season, and again was the first Vet 50 home, in 12th position in the race, so all in all another fine summer’s evenings of the Midweek league finally brought to a conclusion, well supported by the members. I would like to thank everyone for their support and I will be hoping that we can surpass this year’s accomplished results with an even better record next season.

Worls Vets Champs, Brisbane Australia 4-14th Jul

Dave Wilcock retained his World Vets title from Gateshead two years ago, running his fastest time for two years. In the 1500m he was just beaten, even though he again ran his fastest time for two years, and was indeed faster than his winning time from Gateshead. Pete Marsh was part of the winning British marathon team. These are all the results I have been able to find. If you know of any more let me know. Full results are on the net.

Southern Womens League, Southend 14th Jul

Denise Gayle was in stunning form. She won the high jump in 1-73, setting a new Club Record and in the process beating the existing ground record, which had been set by international heptathlete Julie Holman. She narrowly failed her attempts at 1-75. So good was her performance that it would have been good enough to have gained her a bronze medal at the AAAs Championships the following day at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. During the afternoon Denise also won the 100m, and 200m, and took the A string shot putt and javelin events as well. Other good performances were by Eileen Griffiths and Philippa Horton who won a double in the senior 3000m, and Joanne Tawiah who won the Hammer, and the B shot and javelin competitions. Bets performances by the youngsters were the double victory by Keli Tawiah and Gemma Smith in the shot putt, and by Gemma Smith and Katherine Henderson with 2nd and 1st in the 75m hurdles respectively. Unfortunately, unavailability due to holidays and other commitments weakened the team, resulting in a third place. After three succesive wins this season this was disappointing. Only a massive performance in the last fixture - against league leaders Ipswich - will secure a top three spot and promotion now.

British Vets National Champs, Eton 24th June

After giving up a chance to run in the National Vets 1500m on the Saturday in order to run for the club instead in a mens track fixture, Dave Wilcock travelled to Eton and duly retained his National Vets O45 800m title - winning virtually unchallenged in 2m 02s. Mike Bennett won a bronze in the M50 javelin with a throw of 45-87.

Southern Womens League, Enfield 23rd June

Another fine allround performance gave a stunning third victory this season, and fourth in a row overall. A measure of the performance levels was the seven double victories by the Seniors - including winning all four Senior 1500m and 3000m events, and 3 doubles by the under 15s. Louise White set a new Club Record for the javelin. Denise Gayle won all her 4 events in a busy afternoon. Such was our strength that we were able to "rest" Denise for the 4x400m and still win it handsomely with three under 18s in the squad. Sacha Rice and Katherine Henderson both set PBs in the 800m, and young Genesis Edwards recieved a stirring round of applause as the only athlete brave enough to take on the girls 1500m on a hot afternoon. It remains to be seen from the league table whether we have moved into the top three with this win. Most importantly though we must get the best possible team out for the next match - away to Southend on Sat 14th July.

Southern Womens League, Peterboro 19th May

A depleted team fought every inch of the way to win their third victory in a row. It was nip and tuck all afternoon with the home side and Colchester, who were next in the league table to us. All athletes played their part in what was essential a team win. Frances Palmer epitomised the spirit of the occasion by travelling over from Bedford, running in three track events, doing one field event and both relays. It was quite a strange match, with no competitors for instance in the girls under 15 hurdles, and yet Sarah Claxton was competing for Colchester (international athlete, sponsored car in car park) and Julie and Anne Holman (high class heptathletes) were both competing for Peterboro. We were marginally in the lead most of the afternoon. Things looked like slipping away at the end when the Holman sisters were throwing big distances in the javelin. However, Denise Gayle pulled out a PB and Club Record to secure third place, backed up by Joanne Tawiah also in third to minimise the points difference. Then there were the relays. We had planned only to contest the two sprints. The Senior Ladies came second to Colchester (who were creeping up on the inside), and the girls came second but had a disastrous 3rd changeover. The baton was dropped, picked up and brought home tearfully. The judges saw fit to not disqualify as no advantage had been gained, and no law broken - so relief all round at 4 points saved. The team manager was rapidly doing mental arithmetic and reckoned it was going to be VERY CLOSE. Then Frances chipped in with "we could always do the 4x400m!". A quick look round, three grimaced "yeses", a run to the declaration table, a quick check with track ref and away Denise went on the first leg. She duly shook the Colchester team up by coming in first. Frances, Philippa and Anna held on for a tired second place for 4 more points. When the results were announced we had won by 4 points - a result greeted by cheering and hugs. So well done to everyone who fought for points all afternoon. We now move on to a home match at Enfield (with our mens team) on 23rd June to see if we can get everyone out and win four in a row. This time we face the top team in the league - so expect a tough match.

British Veterans Road Relay Championships. Sutton Park, Birmingham 12th May
A truly magnificent performance by the Over 50 team after great runs on the first two legs enabled John to take the lead (!) on the third stage. Des and Pete were 7th and 26th fastest out of 235 over 50's competing. Mike was 7th fastest out of 76 in his age category and Tom, Derek and Ron received in addition to a team gold for winning, a medal of each colour for being the fastest three times in their group. A great day for Barnet but sad that we could not field a team in the Over 40 Race.

SC Vets Track & Field Meeting. Enfield 30th April
It was a cold but thankfully dry evening for the first vets meeting. We had a full and enthusiastic team out, despite some illness and injuries. There were many good performances. Karen won her section of the 1500m, Denise had 1st, 2nd and 3rd in her events, Jane was pleased with a PB in her 1500m race and our walkers did well. Newcomers were glad they came to take part and we were encouraged by keen supporters, some of whom we hope to see running next time. All in all a good kick off, the only disappointment being that Kim and Penny didn't get to throw the javelin as lack of space and failing light deemed it unsafe.

Southern Womens League, Ilford 28th Apr

The womens track and field team triumphed in the rain in their first track meeting of the season. At one point the downpour was so bad that the long jump competition was temporarily halted. This also was the reason for some low winning heights in the high jumps, as these both took place in poor conditions, with a slippery runway. The result was based on good all-round performances by both the Seniors and the young athletes. Double firsts were obtained in the Senior shot and high jump, and the Girls shot and discus. There was one Club Record set - by Joan Amaa in the Senior Shot, showing that going away to University hasn’t taken the edge off her performance. The afternoon was crowned off by a fine win by Sacha, Keli, Gemma and Laura in the Girls 4x100m relay - giving a final margin of victory of 70 points. The team now goes into the second match knowing that even better scores are possible, in that several key athletes will be available for that when they were not able to do the first match.
