The Three Legged Trophy 18th Aug
Defending champion Sean Mitchell was well placed after the first two events
but failed to appear for the biathlon as he apparently had something else in
his diary that he considered more important. This left the question as to whether
Kirsty could make up the advantage that Steve had gained in his speciality event,
the Orienteering. Steve knew that he would be slower that Kirsty but he paced
himself well and had a reasonable margin at the end. Kirsty was faster in two
of the disciplines and after being runner up for a second year she will probably
brush up on her orienteering skills. However faster still in those two other
disciplines was Rodger and he may well have won this year if he had not been
such a gentleman and held back in the orienteering to help his wife. This is
the fourth year of this award and Graham Barnett, the first holder, is the only
person to have done all four. Derek Wood

Club Biathlon 18th Aug
Defending champion Dave Candy arrived and announced that he had trained for
a couple of months and that he was grossly unfit it seemed that a closer and
more interesting race than usual was in prospect and so it proved. The staggered
start at intervals of 30 seconds prevented the performances at the end of the
cycle ride being immediately obvious but after making adjustments for the starting
times Dave was fastest, but was only one second ahead of John Shirley- with
Marco Arnone, a guest, just four seconds further back. John then had an excellent
run, indeed the second fastest of the day, and rapidly overtook the rest of
the competitors who had set off before him on the staggered start. He crossed
the finishing line long before anyone else came into view and when Dave completed
the run a rapid calculation revealed that John had achieved a notable victory.
Some interesting facts emerge from this years event. John won this event without
having a fastest time in either of the disciplines. John and the majority of
the finishers are over 50 years of age. As John took the Championship trophy
the Veterans award went to the next veteran who was Rodger Thompstone but he
had only one second advantage over Alan Harvey. They were two minutes apart
on the staggered start and never saw each other during the race. However, their
times for the run were identical and Rodger was just that one second faster
on the bike. Steve Chilton did exactly the same time for his bike ride and run,
was 9th in both and in his overall position. Des Michael had a relatively slow
bike ride but then recorded the fastest time for the run while claiming that
he missed the final briefing and erroneously took the longer route coming out
of Hadley Woods. Greg Mailer, who is in the process of joining us, arrived much
too late for the bike ride but had a very promising run. The awards were made
at the usual post race picnic in the park. DW

Family Paarlauf Championship 15th Aug
We are very much a family club and this event was devised specifically to promote,
foster and encourage family participation and teamwork. However, the Paarlauf
has been open to non-family teams since the introduction of the Three Legged
Cup to enable athletes to obtain a time to carry forward towards that Trophy.
As an open club championship event it has proved remarkably popular but at the
same time there have been fewer family teams that meet the original criteria.
It was therefore decided to exercise a degree of flexibility in respect of the
awarding of the trophies for this event. There are now 4 awards since Maureen
and John Shirley have kindly donated a trophy for the first non-family team
with a lady. There was a record entry of 15 teams (including a guest team from
Enfield & Haringey AC), 14 of which closed in. As a consequence, there was a
degree of pressure on the officials, particularly in the early stages, and much
praise is due to timekeeper Chris Stott and recorders John Owen and Brian Strong.
Phil Cunningham, who was unable to be with us last year, was back in tandem
with brother Andy and this powerful team which achieved the course record two
years ago again proved head and shoulders above the rest. The fastest individual
lap of the evening was recorded by Phil on his second circuit when he sped round
in 1.59 but he paid the penalty for his moment of glory and seemed to struggle
a little on his four remaining laps. Brother Andy ran a much more balanced race
which included laps of 2.00 and 2.01 and had the best aggregate individual time.
Team Cunningham received the principal Paarlauf Cup. The Eugene Nickolaev Plate,
for the first family team that includes a lady, went to Kirsty Johnstone and
Des Michael in 3rd place and Kirsty’s time ensures that she has a chance of
winning the Three Legged Cup. The Peter Frean Cup for the family team with the
highest aggregate age was won by Reg Black and Karen Faloon who have notched
up 110 years and they finished a creditable 7th. The new “Shirley” Trophy noted
above went to Katherine Woods and Sean Mitchell who were a splendid 2nd overall
and Sean too is well placed for the Three Legged Cup, although Steve Chilton
is ahead after two events. Dave Wilcock’s individual laps record of 1.52 was
always safe, as was his best aggregate time of 11.57. New members Hanna Gul
and Claudia Pensa completed 3 laps each in 8-56 and 8-59 respectively. Derek

BMC/Nike Grand Prix Watford 14th Aug
Kath Woods was invited to compete in the Nike BMC Grand Prix at Watford, on
the basis of her times earlier in the season. All races were supplied with pacemakers
to give athletes a chance of PBs. The pacemaker in Kath’s race went through
400m in 64s (with Kath in 67s), which was ahead of shedule for her and indeed
for most in the race. She held on well on the second lap (74s) to record an
new PB and knock a further 1s off the Club Record. SC

Club Orienteering Championships 11th Aug
This year we returned to Trent Park for the annual Sunday morning Pymms party
which is preceded by the club Orienteering Champs and, as is usual, some participants
were keen to register a good time to carry forward for the Three Legged Trophy.
There were 7 control points to locate, on or close to our cross country course
and the regular training circuit and the distance was approximately 7 kms depending
on the route taken. Almost everyone located all the controls and in the main
the standard was good, particularly that of the first three finishers. Defending
champion Steve Chilton, who also won this event in 1994 and 1996, chalked up
another comfortable victory after claiming that he is unfit because his busy
coaching programme prevents his doing any training. Clearly, his good map reading
and knowledge of the ground stood him in good stead. He did however confess
that he misread the map when approaching the second control and initially went
astray. Sean Mitchell again grabbed 2nd place but he was hard pressed by Kirsty
Johnstone who was hot on his heels. Control point 5 proved rather challenging
to some of the competitors notwithstanding the fact that it has been used on
a previous occasion. However, this year the approach was from the opposite direction.
One participant said that he spent a hell of a long time searching for No 5
control and finally decided to give up only to discover that he was then standing
just five yards away from it. As the competitors finished they gathered together
for the social part of the morning and most of them quenched their considerable
thirst with Pymms. We were joined by club members who had not competed but came
along to support the event after their training. It was good to see Bob Taylor
out on a secret training run and if his poor old knees hold out he may make
a gentle comeback. Much fruit and many of the sandwiches were quickly consumed
as was most of the other refreshments. A group of Trent Park Trotters who jogged
past on a training run were invited to have a drink but declined to stop and
take refreshments with us this year. As usual it was good fun as well as providing
a useful training workout with a difference. Although it was rather soggy underfoot
in places, particularly at the start and in the master map area, the weather
was good and we had dazzling hot sunshine for the picnic. DW

National Veterans' Track & Field Championships. Copthall 27th/28th July.
These Championships took place on the hottest weekend so far for this summer.
The hottest day was on the Sunday when the 10,000 metres were held when there
were many drop-outs in this and other distance races, due to the high humidity.
The results below show that we had a very good share of the medals. This was
to be the last time that these championships are to be held under the British
Veterans' Athletic Federation, as at the A.G.M. held on the Saturday evening
it was passed that the name be changed to British Masters Athletic Federation.
All vet men are now "Masters"! Are the women "Mistresses"?

It was unfortunate that this race coincided with the one day strike on

many more than our Division 1 race at St. Albans. On that occasion 242 competed
as against 281 in this race which involved clubs from both divisions. 5.4 Miles

Womens Southern League, Tonbridge 6th Jul
The team came an excellent second equal in their womens match against
two of the top clubs in the division. There were a feast of good performances
throughout the afternoon, with the tone being set by Vicky Hyland and Louise
White winning the A and B 400m hurdles events. Subsequently three new Senior
Club records were set in the 400m, 800m and Javelin. The 400m and 800m records
were set by the Barnet athletes winning closely fought contests in both cases,
with Denise Gayle and Kath Woods showing their determination down the home straight.
Louise White was inspired by a very good javelin competition to extend her own
Club Record. Double wins were also achieved in the Senior 3000, 400m, discus
and high jump - where Denisse Gayle attempted a new Club Record of 1-75 and
narrowly failed three times. Jill Dinsmore showed her increased confidence in
scoring good points in a range of events. The afternoon was topped off by a
fine win by Denise Gayle, Vicky Hyland, Philippa Horton and Kath Woods in the
4 x 400m, where they were never headed and strode home to victory. The youngsters
all performed well against very strong opposition. Katherine Henderson won her
75m hurdles event, and second places were obtained by OJ Johnson-Sherlock in

Womens Southern League, New River Stadium 8th Jun
The women's team couldn't match their mens team in winning their home match.
A very strong Ipswich team swept all before them. Inability to fill all events
allowed Braintree to sneak past at the end of the afternoon, by just one point.
The highlight of match was the final event, where the 4x400m relay team all
ran superbly to knock three seconds off the club record time, with Denise Gayle
running an exceptional 59.2 first leg. Another club record was set by Louise
White in the pole vault. On the track Kath Woods won an excellent 800/1500m
double. Vicky Hyland won the 400m on her league debut, and anchored the 4x400
relay team. Denise Gayle won the 200m in style on her training track, and had
a good go at a new record of 1-74m in the high jump. Gemma Smith won the 80m
hurdles. For the under 15s OJ Johnson-Sherlock had three second places, and
Zoe Barton won the high jump despite injuring her arm in the process. Emily
Prati showed her determination by taking 2nd in the 800m in the last few strides
after a determined home straight sprint.

Southern Womens League, St Albans 18 May
We came a close 2nd in our womens league match at St Albans, in what turned out to be a very evenly matched contest between the top three teams. The Seniors did particularly well, scoring 1st places in 15 out of the 31 events, including doubles in the 800m, 3000m, shot and high jump. Denise Gayle won her three events in style. Kath Woods won her 800/1500m double with well executed but close victories in both cases. Perhaps the performance of the day was that of Louise White who competed in 5 events and won 4 of them over an impressive range of disciplines. Also victorious were Karen Murphy and Helen Hoyle in the 3000m, in Karen's first track race for the club and Helen's for the season. Wins were obtained by Philippa Horton in the B 800m, Joan Amaa in the shot and Keli Tawiah in the hammer. The 4x400m relay team - led off by a stunning leg by Denise Gayle - completed the afternoon with an impressive win. Competition was tough in the under 15s - for what was a very young squad. Their were two victories for OJ Johnson-Sherlock in the 100m and hurdles, but all athletes performed well - including some doing events for the first time in competition. When the results were calculated it was 2nd by 3 points - perhaps a missed opportunity, with a couple of unfilled events that could have given us the 4 points required to win.
