Southern Womens League, Copthall, 7th June

We scored another stunning win in our second womens league fixture at Copthall. We are now unbeaten, and top the league by a massive 99 points, with promotion to the second division very much on the cards now. The result was based on the club’s all-round strength, showing results from the gradual integration of our young athletes, and of good performances from some recent recruits. Highlights of the results were the Club Records in the 800m by Kath Woods, the 3000m by Jane Laws, and in the triple jump by Vicky Hyland. Louise White again starred, scoring firsts in 3 A string events and 2 B strings, while Denise Gayle won her three events in style. Youngsters Keli Tawiah and Kath Henderson both won their two events. For the under 15s Zanthe Wray ran a very sensible race to win the 800m, while Asha Day and Nicola Wallis scored a double in the discus. Although not winning there were excellent PBs by Nicola Wallis and Victoria Bryant in the 1500m.

Southern Mens League, Hastings 31st May

After a slow start in the field events we came back strongly but had a little too much to do to catch Hastings. A depleted team competed well. Despite some injuries during the afternoon we still made a strong finish with A and B wins in the 5000m, 1500m, triple jump and steeplechase, and both relays.

Middlesex University Fun Run, Trent Park 21st May

Several club members took part in the annual Middlesex University Fun Run, organised by a team led by Mel Parker and Steve Chilton. We provided three of the four individual winners in Richard McCormick and Kath Woods in the 4km, and Helen Hoyle in the 8km. Perhaps THE run of the day was that of young Niall Fleming, who came 5th in the 4km race, surprising a few seniors on the way.

Midweek Road League 10km, Stevenage 20th May

I was delighted with the number of runners who did turn up as quite a few said they may not come. Please note that the number you are given is for the whole series, so do not lose it. If in an emergency a runner leaves their number behind it will be possible to use a made up a new number. I was delighted that two of our runners came within the first five but knew that the other teams had runners in depth so a top place would not be possible. So as it finished the SM and the Vets Barnet finished in fourth place out of six. In the combined as the women ran very well the overall combined performance Barnet & District finished third. I hope that as many runners from the club who want to run can. I agree it is a journey to get to these races but at the end it is well worth it. The next event is Welwyn Garden City 5th June so I hope to see you there or the next event and sorry I regret I do not know all our runners but will be pleased to see you.

Southern Mens League, Southend 17th May

Blustery, chilly, wet day. Not a terribly well organised meeting, which was running over 30 mins late most of the day. Good efforts in the horizontal jumps again, with Chi and Peter beating their respective rivals with their last jumps in the long jump, and then demoralising them in the triple jump. Excellent wins by Andy and Colin in the 5000m and then Dave and Andy soundly beating all comers in the 1500m. Tony Henshall is improving, and Alex and Jason both did well in the rotten conditions. Again a good atmosphere and spirit in the team and at the meeting as a whole.

National Masters Road Relay Champs, Sutton Park, Birmingham, 17th May

Ladies Race W55 Team. 3 x 5km The star of the day was Karen F., who backed by good runs from Maureen & Pauline L., led the team to silver medals (one better than last year’s bronze). Karen also got individual silver for the 2nd fastest time of the day (behind Serpentine’s Pauline Rich). We were all overjoyed with our success, as realistically we were not expecting to get higher than 3rd. The competition is getting more competitive each year with more teams entering, our time this year would have won last years race. We must thank our friends & supporters round the course, especially those from SB, who still cheered us even though we pushed their team out of the medals. Rivalry & friendships is what Veteran (opps sorry! Masters) athletics is all about.

Ladies Race W35 Team 3 x 5km

Last minute changes to the running order had Penny W. setting off on the first leg (a race a fair bit shorter than her last one a month before) then handing
on to Pauline M., who had a really good run. However drama was happening on the sidelines, Jane L. was not feeling well & after warming up realised she was not fit to run. Kirsty had come to support (still not fully recovered from her recent injury) & was doing a training run round the course when Keith caught her up &
explained the situation, she stepped in & saved the day by running the final leg so we had a complete team, true team commitment. We wish Jane well & hope her health problems soon get sorted out; she was devastated at not being able to run.Well done to everyone in both teams for making the long trek to Sutton Park, I’m sure we’ll be back again next year (if only for the shopping at Bourne Sports stall!)

Herts County Champs, Watford 11th May

For the Seniors Cath Perry gained a silver medal in the 400m in 67.0, whilst Kath Woods set another Club record in coming second in the 800m. For the under 15 girls Zanthe Wray ran a PB in the heats to gain her place in the final, where she came 8th. Jordan Smith added over a metre to her PB and gained a bronze medal in the shot putt. For the under 13 girls Emily Prati also did a PB coming 5th in the 800m. For the under 17 boys Alex Horton came 6th in the 800m, whilst Jason Mbuyamba won a silver in the high jump. For the under 15 boys two made the final of the 100m, with Stephen Rayner taking bronze. Sam Rice achieved a new PB to gain bronze in the discus. In the under 13 boys Niall Fleming followed his medal in the 1500m with a new PB to gain bronze in the 800m. Despite all the critical comments in the press about county champs standards it was good to see hese young athletes performing well and achieving so many Pbs. It does seem a shame that the Seniors largely ignore this event.

Middlesex County Champs, Mile End, 10th May

Denise Gayle jumped well in the windy conditions to win her event with 1-70. She very narrowly missed clearing 1-73 off 7 paces so this augers well for a 1-75 or more later in the season. Louise PBd with 2-30 in the pole vault, using a borrowed pole to come third, then braved the elements to win the shot. Vicky Hyland arrived just in time having been delayed in traffic. She was disappointed with her 4-95 against the wind. She had a couple of excellent 5m+ jumps which were fractionally over the board, so after the British Universities, where she jumped 5-27, she too looks set for an excellent season.

Herts County Champs 1500m, Watford 5th May

There were excellent results from five athletes in the 1500m events at the Herts County Champs. In the Girls under 13 event Emily Prati showed a huge improvement since last summer by winning a Silver medal in a time of 5-39.6. In a tough Girls under 15 field Zanthe Wray ran a strong race, and also improved her Personal Best by a big chunk, coming 7th in 5-29.6. For the Senior Ladies Kath Woods ran her best 1500m race yet to take the Bronze medal in a new PB and Club Record of 4-52.1. In the Boys under 13 race Niall Fleming showed a new found maturity by tracking the leader for 3 and a half laps before trying desperately to outsprint him down the home straight. He lost it on the dip, but gained a Silver medal and a massive new PB of 5-12.5. For the Boys under 17 there was a strong field of 12 runners. Alex Horton set off in a determined way, taking the lead for the first 400m or so. When the race hotted up he held on for 6th, again in a PB of 4-33.2. Five new PBs, and three medals was just reward for these athletes. The youngsters in particular have been working hard under coach Jim Neville, and he (and they) should be proud of these results.

Verlea Open, 18th Apr

A good performance from all the athletes in this blustery open. A strong headwind down the back straight seemed to hamper the running at times. Steven and Vicky both won their age groups in the long jump, although a few cm more on each would have been nice. Well done to those who got PBs, and well done to Jeremy for a quite stylistic forward roll at the end of the 100m.
