| 24th Feb | National Cross Country Championships. Durham | Unfortunately we did not send a team but this did not deter Keith Turner, despite being unwell since New Years Day, from making the trip. This being his first race since that time and finished the 12K course in 1,108th position in a time of 57.30. |
| 17/18th Feb | BVAF Indoor Championships. Cardiff | Gold Rush in Cardiff Four golds and one
bronze was the total of medals won by our members who competed at the excellent
facilities offered by the University of Wales Institute. Men 45 In the words of Athletics Weekly, Dave Wilcock displayed his usual smooth striding style as he sped to an 800/1500 double when twice leading home former champion Kevin Archer. In the 800m Dave’s winning margin was by just over 4 seconds, recording 2.04.03 and in the longer event (in which he was fractionally faster than the O/40’s) he recorded 4.12.52. The 1500 was held on Saturday with the 800 on Sunday and later for good measure competed in the 3000 metres finishing 4th to Nigel Gates (8.46.71) in 9.24.74! Men 55 Terry Ryan made the trip although both his events were held on the Saturday. He just missed a medal in the 60 metres by one hundredth of a second, finishing 4th in 8.31s. In the 200m he finished 2nd in his heat in 29.90 but did not progress to the final. Men 70 Another gold for Jaroslav Hanus plus the prestige of equalling the British O/70 Indoor Record for the Shot when he putted a distance of 10.61 metres. He now shares the record with B Metcalfe who achieved this feat about twelve years ago. Incidentally, whilst on the subject of the Shot, ex-member Don Vanhegan still holds the British O/60 Indoor Record of 13.81 metres set up in 1983. Men 70 Only a bronze (!) on the Saturday for Laurie Forster in the 1500 when he recorded 6.10.17 but the following day he made up for it by winning the 800 Gold in 2.56.86. Congratulations to all above for putting the club into the “National” limelight and good luck to the members travelling to Bordeaux 8/11th March to compete in the European Indoor Championships. |
| 15th Feb | Middlesex Schools Champs, Harrow School | It was nice to see Tara Weaver back to form and
winning the U19s race, which was rearranged by one week as Parliament Hill
Fields was again deemed too wet for the youngsters to run on. Eileen Griffiths
ran herself into the Middx School team for the English Schools Champs at
Chelmsford on Mar 10th, and Sean Reid and Craig Goddard have been named
as reserves. Unfortunately, the English Schools Champs themselves eventually
fell victim to the foot and mouth disease cancellations. So Eileen had to
carry on with her school’s fieldcourse instead of coming back early to run
in the race. GU19 5 Eileen Griffiths GU15 23 Louise Fairhead BU19 13 Craig Goddard BU17 12 Sean Reid |

| 10th Feb | Inter-Counties Cross Country Champs. Wollaton Park, Nottingham | Congratulations to Helen and Karen for gaining
selection to represent Hertfordshire in the Senior Women’s 8K Race. May
these two members be the first of many to bring such honour to our club.
Helen was the 4th scorer for the Herts Team which finished 13th of the 31
counties competing. Of the eight allowed to run Karen was the sixth Herts
finisher. Sean Reid was also selected for the county under 17 team after
his excellent run in the County Champs. He had a slightly below par performance
to finish 6th county scorer. 120 Helen Hoyle - 33.28 198 Karen Bradley - 35.30 132 Sean Reid - 24-06 |
| 3rd Feb | Chingford League 5 Mile Road Race. Victoria Park, Hackney |
Another fine result, achieved by strength in depth, and in spite of Dave
and James running indoors at Birmingham. Overall we are now 8 points clear
in the A string and need to turn in the best team performance possible
at Eastway to seal the title (for the first time ever?). A slip in the
B means we probably can't win that now, and the loss to Orion in the Vets
means we have to beat them at Eastway to win that title. The ladies section
is a question of what might have been - we started concentrating on this
league too late in the season. An excellent turnout saw us win the section,
and in with a chance of second ladies team overall. |

| 25th Nov | London Cross-Country Champs, Parliament Hill | Ladies Race 5km Conditions were amongst the worst
I’ve seen at Parliament Hill (& I’ve been going many years). It did not
stop raining & was extremely muddy but it did not deter our intrepid team.
Helen was well suited to the hilly course & led the team home followed by
Karen, Jane & Pippa. It was good to see the latter two racing again after
recovering from illness & injury. We finished a very pleasing 8th team (out
of 15). Well-done team & thanks to Mick T. for team managing in the pouring
rain. Results: 1. It could have been even better had Andy and Dave W started with the others at the gun! A great run for Mike S who headed our team with the remaining “A” squad closing in within the next 22 seconds. A horrible wet day for everyone although the course did not appear as cut up as for recent “Southerns”. The Youth Games races which normally precede the senior races were cancelled, as it was considered that many of the youngsters would not possess spikes and would flounder in the conditions. This decision did not please Sean Dixon who had been preparing for this race. 31 Mike Stapleton V40 36.33, 32 Dave Wilcock V45 36.42, 34 Patrick O’Toole 36.43, 35 Simon Hime 36.55, 42 Mike Earthy 37.28, 43 Dave Candy 37.37, 65 Andy Cunningham 39.23, 74 Des Michael V50 39.46, 75 Graham Adcock 39.47, 96 Zac V40 41.23, 115 Liam O’Hare V50 42.15, 125 Francis Robinson V40 42.36, 155 Rodger Thompstone V45 43.53, 203 John Fuller V55 48.09, 213 John Mould V50 50.01, 227 Stephen Hewitt V50 54.03, 230 Peter Redshaw 55.50, 237 Joe Cox V65 65.15 Teams. 1. | 18th Nov | Sri Chinmoy 10k Race, Battersea Park | At 8.30am Karen and I started the Sri Chinmoy 10k race around
Battersea Park. It was a fast course, completely flat, 5x 2k laps around
the perimeter of the park, starting near the bandstand. As we assembled
we were told there were 180 runners competing, and we could see that women
were well represented. Karen set off like a rocket, following the first
lady – a Dulwich Runner. I gasped that the pace was too fast, but she obviously
didn’t hear me. I did the first 2k in 7.19, which was certainly too fast
for me. We were aiming for just under 8 min/2k, to break 40 mins. Although
it was a fast course, progress was hindered by tight bends, ‘leaves on the
line’, and an excessive number of slow joggers whom we started to lap. I
knew by lap 3 that I wouldn’t break 40 mins, and that Karen probably would.
My old injury (??!) was playing up, and I thought about John’s warnings
about too much racing. Karen came in in an impressive 39.57, and I did 40.48
- slightly disappointing, as I had run 40.38 at Letchworth several weeks
earlier (although I had been chasing Nick Bingham). Karen and I finished
2nd and 3rd respectively and collected tasteful trophies. Hers was bigger
than mine, but some say size doesn’t matter. 2 Karen Bradley 39-57, 3 Helen Hoyle 40-48 |

| 11th Nov | North London Cross Country Championships. Kingsbury | Wet, windy, waterlogged more or less sums up the course,
the wet coming from above, below & all-round. However our intrepid team
of four didn’t let it put them off. There had been hasty changes in the
course, so hasty that when we set off we thought we were running 6km, it
was only as we approached the finish (with Josè shouting 200m to go) that
we realized the distance had been shortened! Helen again led the team home
with Kirsty having a good run, just getting ahead of Karen, with Maureen
completing the team. We warmed down supporting the men’s (depleted) team
& then returned to await the results. Kirsty’s good run brought her the
2nd Vet Lady medal & overall the team were 3rd (out of 9), so not a bad
afternoon’s work. Again it was disappointing not to have a vet team (only
one more was needed) as we would have probably won. This race is usually
one of the most popular on the ladies calendar, however this year we had
a number of athletes with other commitments, quite a few with injury problems
&, of course, the weather has been off putting. I’m not complaining though,

| 7th Nov | Chingford League, Eastway 5km |
A good, but not great result, at Eastway, gave us 2nd in the A, B and
Vets and 3rd in the Ladies. Overall we are still winning the A string,
being 3 points clear of Orion with 4 races to go. We actually were missing
our first two scorers from the first Eastway - Dave C and Andy C. Had
they been able to be there we would have seen Orion off on the night and
possibly for the season. We can still do it, but we have to go all out
to win one or both of the cross country races in December, so let's all
get out there and win this league at last. It may go down to the wire
[Eastway III] !! For the ladies Helen Hoyle won the race by a good margin,
with Kirsty Johnstone finishing an excellent 5th. |

| 21st Oct | Chingford League, Loughton | What a marvellous performance - quite possibly
our best ever overall in the Chingford League. We were only one runner away
from a clean sweep of the mens, B, vets and ladies categories - we won all
but the B. A rough calculation suggests that one of the two members of the
winning team from Eastway that couldn't attend needed to be there and finish
about 25th (one was 13th then) and we would have done it. It IS possible
to do it, so let's have a go at getting everyone out for the next
fixture - Tue Nov 7th for the second Eastway 5km. | 21st Oct | North West London League, Harrow | More excellent performances in the second NWLL
fixture. Numbers attending are steadily rising (3 more than last time),
as are performance levels. Best efforts were those of Sean Dixon, who very
nearly pulled back the leader on the run in, and Katherine Henderson who
was 8th - her family all calling in with a loaded car on the way to the
Lakes for half term holiday, as she and Matt were so keen to compete for

Despite the problems with petrol, Des Michael and Nick Bingham made the
trip to race around this picturesque lake. Des met with great success removing
2m.07s. from his previous best and was the 1st Vet 50 for which he won a
pair of trainers. Des finished in 27th place out of a total of 1,022 finishers!
His personal best is now 1.15.27. This time places him in 18th position
on our "All Time List". Nick also had a good race finishing 174th and 6th
