| 10th Nov | North London Cross Country Champs, Perivale | Four ladies turned out on a lovely sunny afternoon.
The hilly and muddy course was testing but the team stuck in and all ran
a good race. Helen was first home for the team in 21st place followed by

| 6th Nov | Chingford League, Eastway 5km road race |
Another clean sweep of all team positions and both individual positions, this time with two different runners to those that won the cross country at Loughton. Well done to everyone, particularly those that responded to the call to compete. We only just managed to win the B by 10 points so really do want everyone out at Trent Park on Dec 15th for the next match if we are to win all four trophies. If we win all four remaining B races we would win by 3 points. If we slip to 2nd to Orion on just one occasion we then have to win every other one to win by just one point - so it is going to be a close call. Helen, Karen, Kath and Leigh were 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th lady finishers.

| 20th Oct | Chingford League, Loughton |
The club achieved a stunning result at Loughton in this fixture, winning
all four team categories, and having both individual winners - possibly
a unique occurrence. Keith Turner stormed to his first league victory,
and possibly the second ever win by a Vet. Dave Wilcock followed him in
- equalling his best ever league position. Then came new member Andy Kelleher
in 6th, with Junior Sean Dixon moving through remarkably on the second
lap for 10th, taking out Richard Gamble at the last knockings. Des showed
that he has recovered from his headline grabbing run at Swansea recently
with a highest ever position - closing the team in at 14th, for a team
score of just 45 points. Fine runs by Mike, Dave, Andy, James etc saw
us close in a B team in 228 points, with the Vets closing in for an amazing
24 points. Without seeing the full results it is difficult to seperate
out the ladies positions, but on the day I wrote down Karen as 1st, Helen
as 3rd, Penny as 5th and Karen as 6th, for an unbeatable team score, well
backed up by the other 8 ladies. There was some discussion on the day
of these remarkable low team scores. Casting my mind back to the days
of Haringey dominance in the 80s I found results in the club magazine
when Haringey scored 37 points in winning at Eastway Nov 87, and scoring
177 with their B team at Eastway in Nov 89. Nevertheless, this was still
a remarkable result, and just goes to show what the club can do. Perhaps
we can beat these scores in one of the remaining Chingford League fixtures! |

| 29th Sept | Southern Veterans' Road Relays. Rushmore Arena, Aldershot |
Our over 50 team excelled themselves by winning the silver medal against
very strong competition in this major championship. Oxford City, the holders
for the last three years were, according to Athletics Weekly, the favourites.
However, Des "psyched up" his men as he was sure a medal could be won
and the team duly rose to the occasion. On the first leg Liam ran an even
paced race finishing 9 seconds down on Hercules Wimbledon who were represented
by ex-marathon International Steve Badgery. Pete then had a good run taking
12 seconds out of the leaders to gain the lead by 3 seconds. On the third
leg John had to take on another International, Grenville Tuck who proceeded
to post the fastest time of the day for the fifties of 20.55 (although
Dave Laynes of Bedford actually ran 20.48 but was not counted as they
did not complete the race). Des therefore started 1.38 behind Hercules.
He steadily whittled this lead down but unfortunately needed a little
more road, finishing just a tantalising 12 seconds behind! After the race
Des was disappointed with his performance as he felt he had not raced
at his best. A couple of days later he developed a bad cold which could
have had a bearing on his run. Nevertheless an outstanding performance
by the whole team. I believe I am correct in stating that this is the
first medal in this event for the O/50's since winning the National Relays
held at Tring in 1988. Des made a great effort to raise teams in all categories
but had difficulty in getting a response from many members. It was most
unfortunate that we could not raise a full team of 40 year olds where
Nick and Reg (both over 55) filled in at the last moment. The same story
for the 60's where Ted and Laurie stepped down and raced in with the 50's
to allow Stephen to compete. With the number of active members in our
Club we should be able to raise teams in all Veteran categories and the
senior event. |
