7th Mar European Vets Indoor Champs, Malmo Dave Wilcock followed his double at the British Vets with a double at the Europeans. He won the 800m in 1-59, and the 1500m in 4-06, taking the prized scalp of Nigel Gates in the latter by a couple of seconds.
6th Mar Barnet Primary Schools Cross Country Relay, Trent Park Two club members were in the winning Christ Church team in the first ever Barnet primary schools cross country relay. Elliott Hind ran the fastest time by a year 6 boy, whilst Katherine Henderson was fastest year 6 girl.
2nd Mar Chingford League 5km Road Race, Eastway On the wettest of possible nights and with less than fifteen minutes prior to the start, we only had half a team and we thought that we had "blown it" with regard to the positions. However, we had some most welcome late arrivals which redeemed the position. We had a high position to defend in all three categories of the team race and on a night that the total field was down by about 40 to 168 finishers, we did just that. Our overall positions of 2nd "A", 2nd "B" and 1st "Vet" were even an improvement on last year. Dave consolidated his win as the leading individual Veteran of the series with Liam being the second. Not bad considering he is over 50! Overall the times were slower due to the wind and rain. However, Dave despite taking it easy (!) as he will be competing in the European Vets Indoor Champs next weekend in Malmo, Sweden, was again our leading man home. Liam, Keith and Ben were very close, followed by the ever present John S and the team was completed by a strong run from Graham. It was the next six to finish who consolidated our overall position in the "B" event. Of these six Rodger had actually cycled to Eastway, picking up a puncture on the way and was seen a few minutes before the start trying to mend it so that he could splash his way home. (If one adds the three competitions together then it would be Barnet 297, Orion 286,Woodford 252).

Feb

27th Feb British Vets Indoor Champs, NIA Birmingham Dave Wilcock succesfully completed the first phase of a possible treble for this summer. He won the 800m (in a Championship Best Performance) and 1500m titles at the British Vets, and now moves on to the European Indoor Vets in Malmo, followed at the end of the summer by the World Vets at Gateshead. As he is still running the same times as last year, but is now in the M45 age category, he had no real opposition at this level, winning the 800m by over 7 seconds. The time was a disappointment as the electronic timing was being used for the sprinting and hurdling events at the same time. The hand time that he was given is at variance with the times taken by three independant spectators (including this reporter), who all had him at or around 1-57.9. As the British/European/World indoor record for M45 stands at 1-57.32 (to Pete Browne) and Dave ran 1-57.3 outdoors last summer it is not unreasonably to hope that he has a good run against good opposition in the Europeans in order to have a crack at this time. Laurie Forster just missed out on a medal in the M65 1500m, and Andy Blackman swept up the gold medals in the M65 60m, 200m and 400m.
800m 1 Dave Wilcock 1-58.9 CBP
1500m 1 Dave Wilcock 4-14.4
60m 1 Andy Blackman 8.81 CBP
200m 1 Andy Blackman 28.56
400m 1 Andy Blackman
26th Feb Inter Services Cross Country Championships. Plymouth Competing for the Army, Andy Arrand covered this six mile course in a winning time of 30.49 ahead of Dick Barton 31.14 (Snowy and Jock were nowhere to be seen) and Mark Flint 31.33. He ran a great race to reverse the positions as both these place medallists were ahead of him in last weeks Inter County Race. We now look forward to having Andy leading in our team in the Senior National in the highest position for a member in many a long year. Congratulations Champion.
20th Feb Inter-Counties, Nottingham Two excellent runs by club members in the CAU Inter-Counties. Andy Arrand came 33rd in the Senior race, running for Humberside; whilst Sean Dixon came 160th in the Boys under 15 race, running for Hertfordshire. Full results are available.
20th Feb Chingford League, Victoria Park 5m road race A large club turnout, but unfortunately not enough of the top runners to really score well. In fact only one of the team that represented us when we won the North London Champs was available on this occasion. Good runs thoug by Des Michael, Ben Wilcock, Francis Robinson and Maggie Govender.

21st Nov British & Irish Veterans Cross Country International. St. Asaph, N. Wales Congratulations are in order for Liam O’Hare and Ron Higgs who have both been awarded their countries vests, against very stiff opposition. Liam in the O/50’s for The Republic of Ireland and Ron for England in the O/65 category. The 10K course, which according to the Athletics Weekly report, was a stern test, in an old fashioned way, had steep hills and also a “kissing gate”. The M50 race was the one most affected by the congestion at this gate. Liam was the 13th M50 to finish in 40.35 being the fourth scorer in the Irish team which finished second to England. Ron finished second in his group in 44.52 just three seconds behind Irelands Declan Walsh and turning the tables on fellow team mate from England, Gerry Spinks, who had pipped him in the BVAF Road 5K in October. Spinks, of Bingley finished a minute behind in 45.51. England had a comfortable victory over Ireland and Wales in this group.

14th Nov North London Champs, Ally Pally A stunning win at Ally Pally was our first ever in the North London Champs. We took home the huge Whiteman Shield which goes back to 1904. It had in fact been won by New Barnet AC in 1926 and 1928, and Hampstead Harriers in 1923 and 1952, but these clubs combined in 1967 to form Barnet & District AC. To top the day Andy Arrand romped home as individual winner, and came away with the Vets team award too. The strength in depth is shown by the 32 runners competing, who scored a B team that we would have been pleased to see as the A team on some previous occasions. The Ladies also performed well for 5th team and 2nd vets, being led home by a resurgent Jane Day.

17th Oct Chingford League Cross Country. Loughton. 5 Mile 1400 yards. A good turnout of 30 club members, but we couldn't keep the momentum going from the first two races, where we had won the A races. This time the other clubs seemed to have got their teams out, and Muswell Hill won convincingly. Dave Wilcock had another fine 5th place, with fine backing from Andy C and Ben A, to keep us equal first with Woodford Green after 3 races.
