| 23rd Oct | Chingford League Cross Country. Loughton | Another good run by Dave to finish first Vet just one place and three seconds ahead of Woodford’s Richard Holland which reversed the position of the recent Eastway race. Adrian, Mike and Liam were close up with James and “newcomer” Grant, making up the “A” team. Leigh Harvey made her debut in this race and was 19th of the 33 ladies to finish. |

| 16th Oct | Southern Womens X-C League - Milton Keynes | The first in this season’s series & seven
of our athletes travelled to sunny Milton Keynes to take part. After the
poor vet turn-out in the road relays, league organiser Bryan Smith decided
to revert to the V35 category for Vet teams (it had been V40 for the last
couple of years in this league). The weather was warm, the ground dry &
rutted, the course a 3 hilly laps, the only flat bit being round a field
of sheep! Not a good introduction for Karen B., Yvonne & Simone, all
taking part in their first cross-county race. Penny W. & Jane renewed
their previous battles with Penny just getting the better of Jane this
time & Brenda & Maureen just dug in to make up the vets team. The
distance was some strange number of metres which I forgot to note down,
but roughly equated to three & a half miles. Thanks to Mick T. for
his usual efficient team managing on the day.

| 10th Oct | Club 5½ Mile Road Cup Handicap. Clubhouse | Graham Barnett had a good steady run and won
by 28 seconds from Tony Hamilton with Brian Strong third, the latter two
having both improved their times in this race compared to last year. In
fact there were seven members who competed in this race last year and they
all recorded faster times this year with the exception of Dave Wilcock,
who recorded exactly the same time as in 1998. (Before anyone mentions
that Jim Neville was slower, I will state that after catching up with Jack
S he remained with him until the finish). Dave Candy was the fastest, beating
Dave by nine seconds and was the first club member to beat Dave in a distance
race since Adrian Mason’s fastest time in last years Boxing Day Handicap.
Karen Bradley had an excellent race with only five men being faster. There
was a good scrap between the second and third ladies with Yvonne C getting
the verdict over Kirsty J. Phoebe Harvey hung on tightly in her “Buggy”
to just beat Granny Brenda but the officials could not split their times.

| 11th Sept | Chingford League Relay, Highams Park | On a very hot day it was not quite the start
of the league that we enjoyed last year when we won all three sections.
This year with a total time of 80.09, which was over five minutes down
on 1998, we finished fifth "A" team. Our "B" was third and our Vets second,
the latter team finishing 24 seconds behind Woodford. Dave was the 2nd
fastest Vet being beaten by Orion’s Paul Filler by two seconds. The merger
between Enfield and Haringey paid dividends as they romped home winners.
There team was made up of three members of each from the former clubs and
was anchored by Simon Wells (13.26) who trains with us each Thursday evening
at our Clubhouse. This will undoubtedly make them strong contenders in
this seasons competition.
