THE PRIME MINISTER | 28 November 1997 |
Dear David,
I have been kept informed about the problems facing the British Athletic Federation and I wanted to let you know that you and your colleagues have my full support as you work through this difficult period. I know that you and the UK Sports Council are taking an active role in forming a short-term, interim body and to initiate a consultation process that will lead toward establishing new structures for athletics in this country. I am delighted that this is happening and I hope that all the constituent bodies within the sport will welcome this opportunity to look, with an open mind at all aspects of delivery and structure. Athletics is a major sport in Great Britain, with a proud record of achievement. Although the current situation is very difficult, I believe athletics does now have a unique opportunity to establish new and even more effective structures to ensure a successful future. I hope you will keep me in touch with progress. I am copying this letter to Sir Rodney Walker of the UK Sports Council and to the Chairmen of the Athletics Association. Yours Sincerely [signed]Tony Blair |
